One 14-year-old youth was found dead only a few days after being falsely accused of stealing the ashes of a dead baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.

Heartbreaking Discovery

Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.

Untrue Accusations Start

The investigation heard how his parent received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The communication added: "Tell him thanks for breaking into my apartment."

In a statement presented to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the media, claiming her infant's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was untrue.

Law Enforcement Inquiry

An investigation report from police later determined the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the property was not stolen in the beginning".

Media reports about the alleged taken ashes generated online comments, and although Kai was not identified in the posts, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".

The "online posts were really distressing", she said.

Emotional Health Impact

She explained that her son had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions really were important to him.

"It would have hurt him deeply," she commented, "particularly when this was not true".

The teenager was arrested at home, but nothing was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.

Police said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the moment of his passing.

Withdrawal and Anxiety

His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".

When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her child informed her he had gone into the house because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he wanted, but denied taking anything.

Digital Harassment

In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed online after the accusations.

The inquest heard that one 19-year-old urged Kai to kill himself.

She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and joking".

She described him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is completely shattered".

He had been "clearly concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".

Educational Reaction

The hearing received testimony from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.

On 8 November, she "heard some boys talking that Kai had been detained and that was the initial I learned".

"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.

After the discussion, the staff member said she rang Kai's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.

The court heard his family said they never got that communication.

Formal Finding

Senior coroner told the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future deaths report.

Providing a narrative finding, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.

"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.

"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the police and following his interview he was freed while investigations proceeded."

The coroner determined: "There is no proof that the actions or failures of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a personal act it is not possible to determine his purpose."
